Bloomberg Terminal - API Limit
Hi guys,
I'm interested in buying a few Bloomberg Terminals, but I got a problem.
I don't know how many API requests I can send - within the Terminal - until I reach the limit.
The dude from Bloomberg gonna send me a specific answer till Mid-January...
You guys are working with the terminals all day long - Anyone knows what the Limit is?
(I know the pricing of the Data License -> extremely expensive)
(Interested in following data: Equity : {Fundamentals, End-of-Day Price})
Best,
Raptor
I always thought that the API is separate from the terminal. In any case, I think that you should be able to get that answer by calling their support number (or by talking to the team within your firm that deals with Bloomberg). If you or the firm are paying for the services, you shouldn't have to wait until Mid-January for an answer.
Based on experience from my last two firms, Bloomberg gave us 500,000 API refreshes per day. So if you have a Bloomberg formula in a cell in Excel and refresh it, that counts as 1. If you are pulling 10 data points for 100 tickers, then you would end up using 1,000. A couple times we accidentally went over the 500,000 limit because Excel automatically refreshed and pushed us over, but Bloomberg reset our daily limit each time. Hope this helps!
There's an easy workaround that makes it unlikely for people to hit the limit: Turn off auto-calculate in Excel. The limit is basically there to keep people from scraping the entire BBRG database. I've only hit BBRG/M* limits while trying to backtest using the programs before getting FactSet, which is honestly a much better system for testing algorithmic investment ideas, despite all its other limitations.
What do you mean by this? Why do you prefer FactSet for backtesting?
I talked to FactSet and they didn't offer me an API. FactSet said, they are able to send me SQL Files! --> SQL FILES!? In year 2020?
The only thing I use my Bloomberg terminal for is PORNHUB.COM
I think you can just find that within the POSH function, although I may need to ask my rep if there is a specific function where I can get that without the ski houses.
Terminal is the software not the workstation computer.
Also from what I recall it’s pretty flexible in terms of choosing limits lower than that - when we first got it installed I think the cheapest one you could choose was 10k requests per month
10'000 requests within BB or do you talk about FactSet?
BBG
Anyone else hitting the monthly Bloomberg data limit more frequently? Used to occur a couple times a year now it feels like every other month. No material change in processes.
I've heard (unconfirmed) that they flag users who reached the limit. If they do, it would also make sense for them to lower the limit specifically for those users (so they can sell you more stuff, also unconfirmed). I'd suggest looking into BQL, the limit on that is a lot higher.
