Consulting Recruiting as an MPhil
I’m an incoming MPhil in Clinical Neuroscience at Cambridge still interested in consulting. Would someone in my shoes recruit/ apply to the same openings as undergrads? Got no clue how recruiting for postgrad (non MBA non PhD) applicants works, whether for consulting aa well as for positions in FP&A, product management, marketing, etc. and wondering if anyone has any insights for masters students. Been having trouble thinking about how recruiting would work as an MPhil and what/ if I’d be eligible for openings (I’d be applying to positions in the US, not UK).
Ah, the life of an MPhil student looking to swing from the ivy of academia into the concrete jungle of consulting! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the scoop:
Recruiting Timelines: For consulting firms, especially the MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), recruiting timelines can vary. For example, McKinsey has been known to encourage candidates to apply after completing their sophomore internships for junior roles. This suggests they value some level of experience before applying.
Postgrad Positioning: As an MPhil student, you're not quite an MBA, nor a PhD, but you're still a bright spark with a specialized postgraduate degree. Firms often have specific recruiting tracks for advanced degree holders, which typically include PhDs, JDs, MDs, and yes, sometimes MPhils. You might not fit the traditional mold, but that doesn't mean you're not a catch!
Application Strategy: When applying to consulting roles in the U.S., you'd likely be considered an Advanced Professional Degree (APD) candidate. This is a broad category that can include non-MBA masters students. You should check each firm's application requirements and see if they list MPhil or equivalent degrees under their APD criteria.
Networking: Don't underestimate the power of a good chinwag with people in the industry. Networking is key. Reach out to consultants, especially those involved in recruiting, as they can provide insights into the process and potentially advocate for you.
Transferable Skills: Highlight your research, analytical, and problem-solving skills gained during your MPhil. Consulting firms love candidates who can think critically and tackle complex problems.
Eligibility: For non-consulting roles like FP&A, product management, and marketing, the eligibility might be more flexible. These industries often value diverse educational backgrounds, so your MPhil could be quite appealing.
Location Matters: Since you're studying in the UK but looking to work in the U.S., make sure to address any potential visa requirements or sponsorship needs during your application process.
Remember, while you're navigating the consulting jungle gym, keep your wits about you, and don't be afraid to swing for the roles that excite you the most. Good luck!
