UVA vs. UT McCombs Transfer for MBB
Hey, so I've been given the rare opportunity to transfer directly into McCombs as an OOS student and so I'm pounding my head against a wall trying to figure out if it would be better to go to McCombs or stick with my current commitment of UVA. At UVA, I'd have to apply to McIntire but I'm primarily looking to major in Economics and Math or some combination of Commerce, Economics, and Math. For reference, I'm hoping to break into MBB and I don't care where I break in.
Currently a mcintire student, we have lights out consulting placement in northeast and south offices, some west coast as well.

Current student at McCombs. If you’re interested in MBB in Texas (which is growing rapidly), McCombs is the no-brainer as we fill in a huge percentage of their Texas offices. We also do send a decent amount of kids to other offices as well, and I think it’s on the rise. If you’re interested in other regions, I’m not too sure, but maybe UVA then based on proximity.
Yeah, what I really liked about McCombs was the McCombs in NY/LA programs which felt super meaningful to me compared to UVA; however, from a friend at McCombs it seems like you HAVE to be heavily involved in the clubs at McCombs to have a shot which is definitely seeming optional at UVA which I seem to like more. I don’t really care about where I work either, but yeah I seriously don’t know cause getting into McCombs is hard enough but transferring as an OOS student is a different breed of difficulty.
McCombs will not place you in MBB consulting outside of Texas.
I did not go to either school nor did I do the MBB thing, so take the below with a grain of salt. I'm good college buddies with a guy who's one of the campus recruiters for Bain in a Texas office. Awhile back before the economy/hiring hit the shitter, I reached out to him about lateraling in from industry. I told him I was pretty open to any office in the US (thinking that would increase my chances) but apparently the Texas offices have a hard time retaining people because everyone wants to try to lateral internally into the NE or West Coast offices (and I understand the phrase everyone is an exaggeration, I'm just the messenger). Because of that, if you want to work in Texas and can prove your ties/desire to stay in Texas, going to McCombs will be the obvious choice, as a commenter below is correct that almost all the Texas offices are staffed by McCombs grads. That being said, if you're wanting to do MBB outside of Texas, I think the easier pathway would be to do it from McIntire. Your OCR experience will be from a broader geographic subset, and there won't be any internal politicking to keep you in the Texas area.
Yeah, that makes total sense, and I wouldn’t be at McIntire I’d be doing Economics and Math at the College. But yeah, this is all really great stuff!
If your concern is not getting into Mcintire, I wouldn’t worry too much. UVa places a ton of non Mcintire kids into MBB
