Stay in NY?
I currently live in New York, about an hour and a half north of the NYC. Just wondering about a location question. I'm going into my sophomore year at some unknown community college and obviously need to transfer to break into a finance role. I'm not talking IB or PE or any of that crazy shit. It would be nice but to be honest I don't have the grades for it. I really am interested in commercial/corporate banking or asset management. Which I know still are competitive to get in. I'm highly considering the University of Houston for my transfer school or University of Florida. My question all of you is this: am I better off getting a Wall Street career if I go to a NY school such as Baruch, Pace or Manhattan? (Not NYU, Cornell, etc like i said I don't have grades like that.) Or should I go to higher ranked schools even though they are out of state? Thanks.
if you really have meh grades and lack of solid experience my 2 cents would be to go someplace la Baruch.
What’s your definition of “meh?” My current GPA is 3.0-3.2. Pretty average but is meh worse or what?
Those are bad grades by banking/consulting standards and on the lower end of acceptable for a lot of large corporations. It's not super difficult to get into those places with a 3.0+ but it takes more work. A lot of application portals will ding you if you're below a 3.25/3.5/3.75, or whatever cut off that company has set.
Yeah I realize that now as I’m getting into the finance world. I still have 6 semesters to bring that grade up and will be getting my MBA. Before I really try to break into corp banking. I have a considerably good resume for my age which I’m hoping will kind of help but I definitely see where you’re coming from. I used to think that a 3.2 was a decent grade but now that I’m interested in finance i really have to try my ass off.
Do you want to work in NY on actual Wall Street or just in a finance role that works in parallel to WS? You can go anywhere and get into F1000 companies, it just depends on what you want to do and the general industry you want to work in (in regards to more corporate roles). If banking is your top choice stay in NY at a local school. Texas schools are heavy in Oil and Gas banking.
