Breaking into Equity Research from Non-Target
I thought I could shed some light on my process of breaking into ER and possibly help some aspiring analysts.

Hope that helps.
I just started in research last week as a lateral hire ('22 grad, 7 months of audit experience). Any tips for effectively learning the coverage and industry? Did you read every filing/transcript and take notes? or any other effective tips you'd recommend? My team covers 30+ stocks so seems like a lot to process at once
You can’t learn everything in one day, it’s going to take time. I would start off with reading each initiation of your coverage to get a base understanding. I’d recommend before earnings to listen to the previous earnings call to see how the company has been progressing. Whenever I go talk to my senior I bring a notebook and take notes on investor days/earnings calls. Also, lean on the other juniors. At my firm everyone is always open to helping and I’d assume it’s the same where you are.
Good luck!
ER is getting easier to break into from non-target because everyone from target schools is flocking to tech and quant firms.
