Recruit PE/HF from a shit bank or lateral?

Hi all, I work at a shitty investment bank and it's not exactly well regarded. Do get some looks from private equity and hedge fund from time to time. My total exp is just over 2 years. Have been in banking for 1.5 years.

The thing that bothers me is: should I first lateral to a better bank or should I recruit for PE directly? Right now the whole world seems to be in a global recession mode and the lateral market is not as hot as people were saying.

Concerns:

(1) If I lateral to a better bank, I'd be seen as a job hopper if I decide to recruit for buyside in 1-2 years

(2) If I stick it out at my current bank, because of its mediocre reputation I absolutely won't get looked at most reputable PE shops

(3) If I lateral to a better place and stick it out for 2-3 years, I'll be Associate/Sr. Asso level and that might not be the optimal time to recruit for PE?

Feeling stuck. Anyone?
