Can anyone explain more about what impact funds are?

Can anyone explain more about what impact funds are? I was looking to invest some of my savings and build my portfolio so, then I stumbled across the term, Impact investments. I heard that it is the process of investing in companies that have social or economical causes. so can anyone explain a bit more about it? and also help me to build my portfolio by suggesting some Companies with social causes? And also if possible can you suggest some good financial brokers who deal with Impact investments?

And are there any ups and downs of this investment method?
