DB IBD vs HSBC IBD Hong Kong Summer Analyst

Hi,

I have received investment banking summer intern offers from both DB and HSBC in Hong Kong. I heard that both banks have limited deal exposure in the equity market, and are rather focused on DCM. Since HSBC is the biggest foreign commercial bank in China with a huge balance sheet, it is obviously stronger in debt financing. Its overall deal exposure from DCM to ECM seems better than DB. (HSBC has sponsored around 5 IPOs in the past 12 months while DB probably sponsored 0). Relatively, DB might be stronger in M&A than HSBC (not sure?). From the WLB and culture perspective, HSBC pays well with pretty good hours and likable culture. DB has longer hours and a little bit higher pay. I am not sure about DB's culture (talked to some previous DB bankers, I think it depends on which team you are on). The return rate of DB is higher than HSBC.

However, I personally want to move on to the buyside (HF/PE) or a top-tier BB (GS/MS/JPM) as soon as possible. I believe a better deal exposure in the debt market couldn't help me to break into the buyside or any other top-tier BB and may rather choose the exposure to M&A as well as the prestige of a falling bulge bracket. But, to be honest, I have no idea of the actual deal flow between 2 banks when it comes to personal or team-specific exposure, and what other BB banks or PE are looking for when it comes to lateral hiring.

What do you guys think about DB vs HSBC in HK? (Exit, Culture, Deal Flow, Training)

Thanks,

Kry
