New job new country -> social life?

Hello,

I recently changed job and joined an m&a team in a different country where I know literally no one. Team is nice but mainly locals so they have their owns friends from uni that they see during the weekend and usual don't hang out with colleagues

Like most of you here it's impossible to have a social life during the week and I usually work 1/2 a day during the week end.Hence my question, has anyone experienced the same thing? And if so, how did you manage to meet people, develop a social life from scratch.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have lived and worked in multiple countries, multiple jobs, and multiple industries (I speak also many languages).

1) It depends on many factors, i.e. local host nation and their culture, your hobbies and interests, and of course you as an individual.
In some countries the local culture is a bit more closed-off, in others more welcoming. The US are fairly open and inviting as an example.

2) Hobbies and interests are a great way to meeting people, i.e. sports, activities, meetups (app), there are apps to make friends, church, social events, street events, and of course WSO and reddit.

3) It hugely depends on your age as well. very young folks have an easier time meeting people, normally. The other good social factor are kids - you meet other parents through school, nursery, (..)

4) Be open minded, of course and learn the local language and the culture. Learn how others are making friends. Is it a local cafe? a gym? Is there a special football club people go see every Sunday?

5) If you are religious - church and activities around it, including volunteering. I met some really nice people when I packed Christmas gifts for homeless children.

6) WSO meetups

7) There are Discord channels for your town as well, with meetups that are well organized.
