Why do aspiring bankers do a S&T internship?

I've heard a few people say it is best to do a S&T internship so you get to see what thats about before committing. Then, even if you don't get an offer back it doesn't matter because you didnt want to do it anyway. Not getting an offer in S&T is a lot better than not getting the offer in IB - is there any truth to this? I think not getting the offer in S&T is worse

so is the question who is better off -

1) interned in S&T, no offer 2) interned in IB, no offer

obviously it's better to get the offer, but at least person #2 has the ib exposure

better to intern in S&T and get no offer cause you can spin it in a way that conveys you want to do banking and not S&T and thats why you didnt pursue an offer. Interning at a BB in IB and not getting an offer raises alot of red flags - why would one bank want another bank's reject unless its a big step down? for instance, i know someone who didnt get an offer from a tier 1 BB (GS/MS) and wound up accepting at a much smaller MM.
