Is networking still a thing for Western Europe and the UK?
Asking because I'm heading to Warwick PPE or Bocconi IE&M for my undergrad, and I've been hearing that either it can't hurt or that it was useless and a waste of time since there isn't a concept like referrals anymore, and it's completely contingent on interviews and internships since hiring is done parallel to work (not entirely sure how to phrase it, but that's more or less the verbatim I remember). I'll be starting work on my technicals this summer as well as relearning French and learning Italian, since I've heard that helps with job hunting, and between that and coursework and trying to get into club positions its likely I'll have my hands full of work, so I'd want to know how much time or if I should even bother with networking.
i assure you that it depends. if you choose bocconi then i tell you that this kind of thing in italy is not nearly as "codified" or practiced as i see here on this forum. also you wont land anything significant on your first year unless your cv is already relatively impressive (i assume it is) but the issue is that your environment wont allow to reach a good italian b2 (at least) level. the language is just too complex, your classes and classmates will speak english and you wont likely do it nor do i advise to. also italian are almost as snobby as the french when it comes to language (and speak even less english). i'd choose warwick tbh as you'll fit better there i think
my cv isnt good tbh, i have one internship in a CA firm where the most I can talk about are my excel skills and collaboration+teamwork. That, and im trying to bank an IB internship at some small ass boutique in my country beore I head to UG. is it worth listing courses I've done with relevant learning on a CV that I submit? as a first year I mean.
Warwick is preferable for me, but the problem is costs, its like a whole 20k euro more than bocconi afaik, and im not sure if its targeted as much for IB, and the course im doing at Bocconi has the strat consult pipeline open if im really struggling cos of the management material. tough news about the langauge tbh but bocconi does force a language exam 2nd year. how big of a concern would you say the language barrier really is? might have to completely reconsider if thats the case
dont sweat about experience. the language will be an issue only and solely if you want to stay in milan which you MUST NOT do. its only owrth it if you end up at some BB/EB. even MBB pay is crap until you hit associate. bocconi brand is strong but it doesnt guarantee as much as it used to. only one thing: bocconi will actually make you study and maintaining a 4.0 is much harder there than at warwick but i assume you're a smart kid as you've managed to get there in the first place
Spring week applications take up a ton of time so don't take on too much work.
thanks mate, ill make sure not to take on too muhc workload or finish up quicker before uni. any advice youd give on gunning for spring breaks? and also, just a bit of clarification on the networking thing if you could- did you have to find yourself doing a ton to find one? or was it somewhat inconsequential
