Live in a UHaul 15k vs Rent 45k NYC
I am a first year incoming analyst looking to move to Manhattan later this year as I start my first year at BB. I’m from the Midwest and have never been to New York City but I was thinking of some alternative ways to live as rent is very expensive at the moment.
In college I worked for a moving company that would store items for students over the summer. Throughout that job I managed to get a UHaul for cheap from the company and started using it for my own side gigs. Now that I have to move to NYC I think if I retrofit it a bit I could turn it into a RV type of situation.
Do you think it’s worth it to live in a UHaul? I don’t have a girlfriend or any friends in NYC really and plan to move to Europe in two years anyway. It would be a sacrifice but I think I could do it especially with a cheap gym membership. Do you think there is any cheap long term parking in Manhattan? I plan on parking nearby or outside the office to make my commute easy.
I plan on backing my UHaul directly into 200 West Street
Depends on your financial circumstances - you’ll get a lot of BS answers later, likely. But to cut to the chase, if you have enough disposable income or are willing to have a small loan, I would advise against this option. If you don’t, this option can work for you but you have to be very careful about where you park. And don’t talk to strangers (obv but NYC is another breed). Also, NYC has some nice parts (if you’ve already made it) but for most it looks like a smelly dump. Wherever you’re from in the mid-west is likely way cleaner no matter the population (2M+ etc.).
You can rent for a lot cheaper than 45k… I have 2 roommates, spend 15.6k, and live in Manhattan
