Incoming Intern Advice
I'm an incoming intern on a year long internship and wanted to ask how I could make the best impact throughout the year, what time should I be coming in and leaving? (Given that its a year and not a summer) and any other general pieces of advice
Based on the most helpful WSO content, making a strong impact during your year-long internship involves several key strategies:
Timeliness and Presence: As an intern, it's crucial to align your schedule with the office norms. Typically, arriving before your designated start time and staying until you've completed your tasks effectively is advisable. If the general office hours are from 9 AM to 6 PM, aim to arrive by 8:45 AM and prepare to stay later if necessary. This shows commitment and reliability.
Efficiency and Initiative: Completing tasks efficiently and accurately is vital. Always ask if there's more you can help with once your tasks are done. This not only shows initiative but also helps you learn more about different aspects of the business.
Networking and Relationship Building: Build strong relationships with your colleagues and supervisors. Engage with them, ask questions, and learn from their experiences. Networking isn't just about professional gain; it's also about understanding the company culture and fitting in.
Continuous Learning and Improvement: Take every opportunity to learn new skills and improve your existing ones. Whether it's through formal training or learning from a coworker, continuous improvement will make you a valuable asset to the team.
Documentation and Feedback: Keep track of your tasks and projects. Documenting your work and seeking feedback regularly can help you understand your progress and areas for improvement.
Professionalism: Always maintain a high level of professionalism. This includes dressing appropriately, maintaining workplace etiquette, and communicating effectively and respectfully.
By following these guidelines, you can maximize your impact as an intern and potentially secure a future opportunity with the company.
