Post-MBA PE recruiting

Hey all,

I know the topic of switching from IB to PE post MBA has been discussed several times on this forum. However, was wondering if there are any insides around how the recruiting process works? Is it like in IB where you are expected to network your way into an interview or is really all driven by recruiters? What are successful strategies people are employing to make the move?


I am a M7 MBA grad who has worked IB for the last couple of years and who is trying to get into an investing seat (associate / sr. associate level). I am working for an EB have some announced deals on my resume.


Would appreciate any tips, tricks and best practices as right now I am mainly talking to recruiters rather than to folks at PE shops.

You’re facing a uphill battle right now though because the market is awful and full of post-MBA PE people with many years of buyside experience looking for the same jobs. Transitioning from banking to PE at this point in your career is never easy but is unfortunately compounded by market conditions.

Keep working the headhunter route but direct networking is your best bet. Hopefully people who went to the same MBA. Outside of that, one ‘in’ is to absolutely crush a deal for a PE client and off-the-record ask if they would be interested in hiring you. If you impress them with your capabilities in a live environment it helps to overcome the fact that you don’t have direct PE experience.
