S&T Lateral Firm and Desk

Just wanted to get some thoughts on how to approach on how to switch both firms and desks.

Essentially, I've been at my current firm for 5 months (graduated in 2023) and I'm currently a rates sales analyst/assistant. I ended taking it as I didn't get my first choice desk after the internship and took what I could get. I don't really like the work - it essentially is just picking up the phone and doing whatever the client tells you to do while charging a small markup. (note im not doing that as im an analyst but that is what the associates - directors do)

I want to be on a desk where I can truly dive in and do some analysis and be able to both calculate a view and be in a position (after x years of experience ofc) where I or the desk can trade on that view. In that regard, I want to be a part of a structured credit (abs / clo / mbs) / a high yield credit desk in a trading / strategy capacity. My current firm has a presence in both of these areas but it is very small and they don't have any needs.

I think that within 4-5 months, it might be the time to begin trying to make the switch as that will let me leave after 1 year of experience with the firm. How would you approach this given that I have this time where I could potentially network or do whatever else you think may be helpful?
