Leaving job to join new VC firm?
Hello everyone,
I recently graduated from a prestigious MBA program and landed a job as a senior product marketing manager at HP with a decent salary and bonus, at least enough to satisfy me (I came from a poor background).
However, after networking and meeting many great people in the Silicon Valley, I received an offer for general partner at a 5 man 100 million tech VC firm in Silicon Valley and Taiwan.
I know there is a possibility that I can go big in VC, one that doesn't exist if I remain at HP, but I am also worried that this could be a failure and I will end up jobless, something that I cannot afford at any cost.
Thoughts?

grow a pair.
My brother made a similar choice, and 5 months later he barely avoided unemployment after the hedge fund imploded by working in product management at a third tier tech firm, now he barely made it back to where he used to be after 4 years at an enormous oppurtunity cost.
would you consider HP to be a first-tier tech firm?
Haha, definitely not, although their offer was slightly higher than some of the FAANG offers I received... I was hoping to find a new job soon anyways, just didn't expect this VC offer to pop up
Is the job actually in SV? If so, I think that most people woefully underestimate how much you need to live comfortable in that area. That "big salary" may not be very good after the CA tax board and the cost of living is done with you. Make sure you run all the numbers very, very carefully before even considering the move.
Actually, my current job is also in the Silicon Valley; that was how I was able to network in the first place. Taxes and costs of living should not be a problem; I am already able to endure that and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with my current salary, and the VC firm offered a higher base.
I’m interning at a firm that is almost exactly what you described. General Partners at any size firm make huge returns and it’s very unlikely that a 5-person team with a $100M fund will fail.
