A guy has asked me to help him launch a fund that has promise. We need to build out a small team (CFO/COO/etc). Though salaries will not be paid until we reach a specific level of AUM. Where could these type of individuals be recruited, without salary being paid at outset?

do you really need a CFO/COO/CCO/etc? You can outsource these roles to consultants very cheaply while you are small. The only reason I would do a C level hire in a small startup is if they were bringing AUM with them. this is what i did.
Exactly. Hiring C level should come from 50MM+ levels, any thing lower than that is not worth giving away equity over. And Consultants and Fund administrators can do it at a much cheaper price.
The premise is to have the CIO manage the portfolio, but to have a solid team in place that can build out institutional-quality infrastructure. When you say Consultants, what sort of Consultants do you mean?
Institutions have a minimum AUM criteria before they invest in the fund, atleast 100MM+ and the fund has to have a long track record of consistent profitability with low volatility, and new fund starts at are the lowest level for the past 2 years in a few decades, due to larger players pickup the majority of new fund inflows and will also have equity in the fund management entity and along with investment in the fund. Also you want to have a good number of investors to diversify the range of investors, you want want a couple of redemption to bring down the whole fund. Consultants can be Ex-Fund managers or law firms and fund admins acting as fiduciary.

you are working backwards 1) do you have a profitable strategy with small drawdowns, that has actually be running your own money in the market? 2) do you have investors lined up asking to give you capital
without these 2 things...everything else is a waste of time...get those 2 things first
