Chances in the Big 3 of consulting

Hey Guys,

I would like some opinions on what my chances would be to enter into one of the Big 3 i.e Bain, McKinsey and BCG, of consulting

I have a B.Eng in electrical and electronic engineering, MRes in photonic networks and PhD in laser physics and optical communications. All from UK universities. On top of that I have (so far) 2.5 years of experience in senior management position of big telecommunication firm + undertaken own consulting projects.

What do you think ?

Much appreciated

They interview a lot of people from all kinds of schools so long as you have some evidence of strong academics, but the first and second round interviews filter out a LOT of people. Without knowing how you handle case interviews, etc., no one can make that estimation for you.

MBB won't know on what level to take you which might work against you. You are overqualified for a associate/analyst position and your experience is too short for consultant. Your degrees sound great and I'm sure you need to be very smart to be able to get them but they don't carry the same weight as MBA. In the UK PhDs are usually hired as associates/analysts. I would wait a year, you will have 3.5 experience under your belt and will be a strong candidate for a consultant position

New PhD's in the US are hired directly into the same position as an MBA. With your experience, you'd probably lateral in at that same level as an MBA with the expectation that you'd be promoted earlier (after 1 year instead of 2 years). The hardest part of the process for you will be getting an interview because the online applications are practically black holes. Start contacting everyone you know in the industry.

Enid has a point with the job experience, 2.5 years may sound few even though I am involved a lot in all stages of project management.

If I am not mistaken, please correct me if I am, BCG and McK put PhDs and MBAs in the same tier. Is that right ?

ivoteforthatguy make a good point on case interviews as well, experience does count a lot in this area...maybe as much as creativity ;)
