Consulting Hiring Outlook... Bleak or Promising?
Given the current economic trends and "anticipation" of recession that has made many consulting firms hold back on hiring, do you guys think there will be a lot of offers this year?
For context, I applied for junior internships last month and go to a tier-two school. I also have a boutique consulting gig for my soph internship this summer.
Incoming MBB here. I’ve gone to several office updates and also been chatting with friends at various offices around the US. The answer to your question is office specific. Some offices really over hired during the pandemic and are rolling back offers this year. Others are still expanding fairly quickly and need to hire to keep pace with that. No office, to my knowledge, is on a full hiring freeze.
That's super insightful, I didn't think of it by office. Are you familiar with whether any of the Texas or LA offices are growing/rolling back?
Unfortunately, I don't know about LA or Texas. Would love for others to chime in as well. The updates I've been explicitly told are: Boston/NYC (fewer FT spots), Southeast offices (slightly fewer FT spots/average class size), and SF (significantly fewer FT spots). Caveat is that the market is changing so quickly that these updates may be moot by the time interviews actually get released. For my office, Q3/4 of 2022 were absolutely brutal, but Q1/2 of 2023 have been stronger than Q1/2 in 2022. Thus, the recruiting team at my office is still trying to gauge hiring numbers, even as the deadlines approach/pass.
Not sure about M but have heard BB in Texas is rolling back due to significant over hiring and anecdotal experience backs it up (interview invites for UT were down about 85% from avg)
I know this was just a month ago, but how do the latest pushed-back start dates affect 2024 recruiting?
I know that a lot of firms delayed the start dates of their 2023 new grads from August to anywhere from October to February.
How will this year's new grad recruiting (2024) be? Will firms hire fewer new grads or will the number of slots be the same as last year's? Will start dates be different?
Hiring is fucked, many competitive kids at my target did not get interviews period
That happens every year in normal environments tho
By competitive I mean reached final rounds with multiple MBB and were given assurances of interviews next cycle. I agree theres a difference but its still not looking good
Incoming MBB in a south office. Hiring decreased for sure.
