McKinsey - Private Equity Practice

Any information on this group? Seems like a large chunk of the work they do is PE due diligence, which should technically be ideal for PE exit opps from a consulting position. But a quick linkedin search doesn't show much, especially when most of their guys are from okay schools and non-IB/consulting summer internships.

Here's a description: http://careeredge.bc.edu/jobs/private-equity-analyst-north-america/

Bain's PEG group seems to be a lot more legitimate and established, and has had consistent exit opps. While McKinsey's equivalent seems to be their Corp Fin practice.

Nothing much has been said about their Private Equity Practice. Would appreciate any insight.

Many years ago, most BAs in the CF practice exited to PE, but that has dwindled mostly due to interest in other areas. Also, your search may be skewed as many people do not identify themselves as CF BAs on Linkedin. If you are interested in PE though, IB is a better way to go than consulting. If you insist on consulting, Bain is probably a better choice. As you said, they have a much larger presence in the PE space compared to the other 2.

To be clear, CF is a function while PE is an industry at McK. These lines are not clear though internally. A CF study can be a PE study or it could be any other industry. And people can work on these studies whether or not they are aligned to CF/PE.

Reputation, assignments, calibre, exit opps, type of work.

Pretty much nothing has been discussed of them, so literally anything I guess. They do PE due diligence, which is supposed to be good for buyside opps, but the calibre of the people (at least on linkedin) seem to be people that weren't cut out for the generalist gig.

Perhaps a why you want to know this information kind of statement might help.

Like I said before, PE is an industry vertical, and a way for McKinsey to market their services externally. Especially for younger guys, you're not going to have people be exclusively PE practice. Very senior (e.g. director) may lead the practice in a particular office, but even an AP that does a lot of work in PE will dabble in studies outside the group. The variety of work will increase as you look more junior. I've never even heard of a BA being aligned to a particular industry, only a function (e.g. BTO, CF, Risk, or generalist). This is why the question is kinda hard to answer, and that's also why saying the calibre of people in PE vs generalist doesn't make sense. They are the same people. Generalists can get on PE projects, or any other project they may like. This is also why there might not have been any chat about it, it's not like some sectioned off group or department. It's a service that McKinsey offers that anyone at McKinsey can work on.

So the reputation is going to be the same is going to be the same as McKinsey as a whole. Reputation vs other MBB, Bain is probable strongest, also as stated before. Caliber of people, same as McKinsey as a whole.

Exit opps are going to be about the same too. If you are a generalist BA, you can put emphasis on getting onto PE studies during your 2 years, making you a good candidate for PE. Like I said before though, IB is a better path for PE.

Trying to be helpful, but you're not giving me much to go on...
