What happens to ‘buy-in’ once retired?

If I recall correctly, the buy in structure for say MBB is you take a loan, pay money, and then your pay in future years is determined as a function of overall profit. Since you have technically ‘bought in’, do these profits continue once retired? If not, do you simply sell them back to the company?
