Tech consulting to Investment banking
I have completed my Master's degree in development economics and done my undergraduate in economics. I just got an offer from Deloitte in tech consulting in the UK and want to program a path to transfer into IB. I have before passed the FRM exams (God knows why) in my undergraduate and also looking to complete the CFA in the near the future. I have researched a bit in the forum and most of the people recommends to get an MBA, however due to personal issues I have started school late, and I'm relatively old now(three years older than my peers). So I'd wonder which is the fastest path to transfer from tech consulting to investment banking?
I have something in mind, but not sure which is the most efficient one.
- transfer to a CF role within the consulting firms (not sure in a year time or two?), then start the application to IB.
2. Start the application to IB directly (after a year time or two?).
Or maybe there are other options rather than taking an MBA, which would consume not much time left in my life. Could I have any suggestions of what to do and how much time to spend ?
Any constructive answers would be much appreciated!!
Your plan is a long-term approach which you can cut shorter by being selective on what you do at Deloitte. Get onto CDD projects and show that deal experience and see how closely you get to work with people from TAS (not sure, worth checking internally). These two things will tee you up well for IB, probably making your profile more attractive to TMT IB than generalist M&A work. If you manage to carefully select your projects and warm up to the right Partners that do more transaction-based work, 12-18 months can be enough for a potential lateral move. The risk is that you might have to join again as an AN1, but perhaps in a TMT team or bank the experience accumulated in this timeframe could propel you to AN2.
Thanks for you advice! would CFA be a good substitute of MBA? How should I make it as AN2 directly? Applying online or through networking?
