citi healthcare equity research offer
I just got an offer for an equity research role at Citi and I'm debating the pros and cons of this offer and need some help. The offer is at the IB associate-equivalent level (i'm currently an investment banking associate at another BB covering the same sector and was promoted to associate after 3 years as analyst so no MBA). I am getting a 20% raise on my base. Could someone tell me what the bonus should be for this position? This is basically a role that requires 3-4 yrs exp so it's not an entry level. Also, how is citi's reputation for ER? They have been ranked 6-7 in the institutional investor rankings the last few years. The senior analyst that I interviewed was really nice but is a top ranked bloomberg analyst but I dont think he's one of the top II analyst. I have pretty good exp so far and I dont know if putting citi on my resume would hurt my exit opps. going forward. What are your thoughts?
I don't have anything useful to offer but I'd love to know where you left so I can apply to fill your spot
Haha I love the comment above! tbh I think you have good background having done IBD for a few years, moving into ER is wise and fruitful. Def cut down the hours. Where are you going to be based though? London or NY? Well I know Citi Healthcare team in London is great! You will have a great time there, then obviously there are better houses for healthcare teams elsewhere which are consistently top, making little space for the ones below to move up in ranking! Are u pharma, biotech or medtech???
You should be more concerned with your individual analyst and where his former associates have gone - covered their own stocks or gone to hedge funds? Also, if you're coming from a bank may not be a bad idea to secure a certain comp (at least on the lower level) and figure out if its cash / stock payout. Obv 100% cash payout would be best. Gluck
I'll be based in NY and will be covering a subsector within healthcare, sorry don't wanna give out too much. Hamsterpig, that's exactly my point. I know everyone keeps saying that I need to be concerned about the individual analyst but there are a couple of other firms that will always top the II rankings and if I can't get into those 2-3 shops, how does that affect the exit opps? Any idea what the bonus would be for a position at this level?
Honestly dude, you won't go wrong going in for Citi! Its reputation for ER won't hurt! Sure you have others like CS, MS are much better in ER for Healthcare sector overall as teams and individuals, but most are like in London and you will be in NY! The exit opportunity after becoming a sell-side analysts is good, especially you have had transaction experience! Should you wanna stay as an analyst (get use to the conference call first!), you can always swap house after 3-5 years to take on senior roles! Trust me, analysts within Healthcare move regularly. Besides, you can transfer to London in the near future if you want to, thats the opportunity Citi could offer! I also think that, you can yourself build up your own reputation and become a star analyst. That what i am thinking myself! If you work in all star teams, you may not have the chance to shine and make impact as much! Bonus, my guess is in ER, expect less than IBD of course (proportional to hours) - but as a Y1 associate, if you on like in NY $120-140K base, bonus perhaps 50-80%.
