Equity Research opportunies in Canada for new immigrant?
I plan to move to Canada in July as a new permanent resident The brief of my background is as following:
3.5+ year buy-side equity research experience in Chinese market,;
1y experience in big 4 accounting firm;
Master's degree in Finance from Oxbridge;
CFA Charterholder;
Speaking Mandarin, Japanese and Engligh.
I wanna continue my career in Equity research in Canada where the experience from China would not be considered, accounting to my knowledge. So I can accept any position no matter of the size or reputation of the firm, no matter of the level (i.e. entry level) or the type of employment (i.e. permanent, contract or parttirme), as long as I can do equity research jobs. Also, I am open to the opportunities in other investment research areas.
I want to know how hard it would be to get a position and I will appreciate your help if you know any opportunities. Thanks.
Hey Antellee, what a lonely thread. I'm here since nobody responded ...so maybe one of these discussions will help:
If we're lucky, maybe I can guilt some users to help you out: Stuart-Allan Tarynmason99 ethan.huntley22
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
I'll throw in my 2 cents, but I'm a noob in the industry so take it with a grain of salt.
International student myself and I have seen a lot of friends where their oversea internship experience not recognized in Canada. I have seen one as extreme as BB m&a (home) to TD customer rep (Toronto). But it'd probably be better for your case since you finished your CFA
There's definitely limited ER opportunity. You sometimes see a few sellside on indeed and almost non for the buyside
My personal observation is that Toronto market is not that small. But a lot of the times opportunities are offered to internal employees. So my advice (it probably sound useless) is to network and just get your foot in the door first.
Best of Luck!
Thanks for your answer.
Ya, not to be a debbie downer but your chance is very slim especially considering the size of ER in Canada. Also, I'm assuming you have no network here which makes it even more difficult. Your experience in China will largely be discounted so be prepared to start at a lower tier finance job.
Toronto would be your best bet.
Thanks. Can you be more specifc about what kind of " lower tier finance job" as you said? By the way, some people mention Calgary would be better for new immigrants. Do you have any idea?
Calgary or Toronto would be your best bet. It all comes down to supply and demand fundamentals for the positions. Calgary probably offers more solid finance jobs relative to the size of the candidate pool. While Toronto has a way bigger market, there are tons of good universities with highly qualified candidates as well.
Tough to define "lower tier". It could be valuation type of work at one of the accounting firms, financial analyst (broadly defined) positions with one of the corporates, more junior analyst role at one of the investment management firms, and etc. My guess is they would discount your 3.5 years of buy-side analyst work in China unless it's a well known international firm. They will obviously recognize PwC brand but still somewhat discount it. Having the CFA designation is definitely a plus, but IMO there are just way too many CFA charterholders in Canada. Even as a CFA charterholder myself, I don't see so much value it offers. As for Vancouver, you can completely forget about it because finance jobs are non-existent.
