ER (Asset mgmt) vs FP&A (Neo bank), better from long term and exit ops?
Situation
- I have been in ER for most of my career.
- 7+years in ER, Sr. Investment analyst at large insurance fund.
- Now, FP&A with fintech (lending), series C+ (SBVF) although not sure how long will I be with this company
- Reason for switching to FPA: Always though as ER it's all knowledge but nothing new skill developed after 7+years. (although now i thinks its true for all jobs)
Problem,
- ER Sr Analyst: 90% analysis, lots of knowledge but consolidating industry and as PM keeping a job is difficult in future after another 5years. I would be happy to remain analyst, but I don't think that would be an option.
- FP&A Manager: Today its about budgeting, cost controls, consolidation, sometimes acquisition, executional role. 5% analysis/60% execution/35% people/politcs management.
- I like learning and doing analysis, I am good at it. however, don't want to live under the fear that in the future (5years from now) I could be jobless
- FP&A: I feel it's a wasted role, with hardly any analysis, and lots of grunt work, political stress, and bad work timings if I want promotion.
- I am seriously torn between continuing as FP&A or moving back to ER.
- ER, I like, but FP&A seems practical purely as it appears to have a lot of options to move around, especially when moving countries. I am thinking Australia
- Not sure which poison to take.
Should I focus on the present and move back to ER, any exit options from asset mgmt later as a senior?
Anyone who moved from ER to Corporate - does it get better ever?
I dont have an answer for you but I wonder how different it would be if you were in a corporate development or fundraising role instead of FP&A. Maybe you will have a more big picture strategic view and work acquisitions.
That was my original plan.
For Corp development/ Fundraising needs a background of IB/ M&A /MBA, I have neither.
Since I work in a startup, I thought I could manage to ask for Corp development, so far I doubt if that will happen in my company. Fund raising is mainly done by IR in our company.
