Business Professional in a Business Casual Workplace?
Hi everyone, I've recently landed a gig at a relatively large pension fund where it has been made clear the dress code worn by most is business casual.
I love getting to wear a suit, and I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on continuing to wear a suit in this kind of environment. Would it be detrimental perception wise? Would you stick out relative to peers?
Any advice is appreciated.
You would probably just look like a douche, to be completely honest. If there is no reason to wear one, then you probably shouldn't unless there is a special occasion (ie client meeting). At my previous company where everyone dressed casual, the only person who wore a suit was the CFO. He was a huge douche.
Feel free to wear the slacks, but never put the jacket on. God will smite you if you put on a tie, jacket or not. The only reason to put on the jacket is if you're wearing nice jeans and a polo or t-shirt and it's to "spruce it up" on a casual Friday.
Wear the suit if that's what you want to wear. They might think you stand out a bit at first, and you'll feel the same, but after a couple weeks no one will bat an eyelid.
On the buy-side people usually just end up wearing what they want to wear. My recommendation is to just fit in for a while, but if you love suits just wear one in and take the jacket off for the majority of the day. No ties.
You like to wear a suit then wear it.
