Suit emergency
This is silly, but apparently I need a suit for a few meetings in about two weeks. I have not worn a suit for a "few years" (like a decade) when I was managing a book on the sell side. Since then, I have lost a bit of weight (15-20 lbs) and the suits are rather worn.
(1) Since this is a relatively short order, where should I go? Web? Stupid shops like Brooks Brothers?
(2) Can anyone recommend a tailor in the NYC that is any good?
(3) Any other tips or ideas are welcome.
PS. Just discovered that I don't have a single presentable tie either, WTF...
i've used this tailor more than a few times for a variety of items, and i found her to be excellent, fast, and well priced. https://www.yelp.com/biz/best-stitch-tailoring-new-york
I'd suggest going to Macy's on 34th street and goto the MensStore (on like the 5th floor?). They have a large variety of brands and cuts, and i'm sure they have a Memorial Day sale going on right now.
Thanks! What should I expect to pay for a decent suit these days?
Anywhere from $150 - $350 including the cost of tailoring. Just picked up an off the rack Tommy suit for $110 and altered the pants. Total came up to a few dollars short of $150.
Go to Suit Supply in NYC and you'll be in and out the same day with tailoring done in-house. It'll look good. Should have a strong selection of ties to pick from as a last minute buy.
Man of the people right here. I'm calling in that IOU during my next btrip to the city. Expect a PM.
You can also look at Charles Tyrwhitt, OK English suits, usually a better shape than American style suits. It all depends on the impression you want to make, some people can spot a cheap suit even if altered a mile away.
