What do you guys think about square ended ties? As I am currently in Germany, it seems to be a trendy thing here among the younger professionals.

Being German, I'm afraid to inform you they are NOT considered trendy. At least not by the guys I work with or my friends back from school.

I think you're referring to a "knit tie". They have no place with a suit, except perhaps a seersucker one. Knit ties are considered a very casual tie. I would only consider it as an option if you are going to a country club that requires a tie or some place similar.
