Watch Advice for my Son
Just need a quick reality check here. We’re trying to pick out a watch for my son as he steps into the world of investment banking. Not just any place, mind you - a top-notch group right here in London (family connections, you know how it goes).
I’ve always been partial to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Reminds me of the good old polo days. But I’m wondering, is that too on the nose?
What do you think about a Patek Philippe, maybe a Calatrava? Or should we go vintage with a Rolex? Always had a thing for the Oyster Perpetual. It screams, ‘Hey, I know how to enjoy my time on a yacht.’
Then again, maybe those choices are a bit too flashy. We tend to prefer the understated luxury of a Lange & Söhne or Audemars Piguet. Something about the way a Royal Oak catches the light during a champagne toast, you know?
Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Nothing too flashy, just old money tasteful. As always, appreciate your time - just like my son will on his new gig.
There are things beyond resale value. There's a reason you don't wear a watch
Reverso is a good choice. People not interested in watches won’t think too much of it. I wear decently nice watches (including a reverso) to the office (PE, not IB) and very rarely has anyone talked to me about them

Get him a GO Senator.
Don't go Patek, Lange, AP for someone just entering investment banking. I'd stick to watches that other analysts could conceivably afford in their first 2-3 years. Reverso or Oyster Perpetual are not bad options.

I wouldn't go for anything too flashy at the junior ranks candidly. It may come across as presumptious, particularly towards those from lower income backgrounds who might not themselves be able to afford a Rolex or comparables.
There are some Breitlings which are positioned towards a premium but not "ultra-premium" audience, and have a younger generation marketing.

Patek or nothing
Agree with other posters, don't get anything too flashy.. Maybe along the lines of explorer if his personality is more into sports or JLC MUT moonphase white dial if you want more of a dress (yet sporty for a young guy) feel.
