Watch suggestions for everyday office?

Hey everyone,

YES I KNOW THERES AN EXISTING LIST, but I’m looking for a daily watch. I already have a Rolex Submariner gifted from my pop, but considering the sentimental value of it, I don’t want to wear it.

I’m currently looking at a Breitling Chromomat G40 ($5600), but am definitely open to any suggestions.

I’m a second year analyst if that matters and I’m looking for around that price range. I like metal straps, not a huge fan of leather

the new Breitling Chronomats are so nice. The gmt with the blue dial is definitely something I would consider buying. I wear a Longines Hydroconquest that I put on a rubber strap. I also have a quartz Tag Heuer Formula 1 thats just a good beater watch. Speedmasters will always be good everyday watches. I like the Schumacher edition with the red dial. Aqua Terra's are another popular choice. IWC piolet watches are nice too.

I would just wear the Rolex, it’s a very durable watch and while I understand the sentimental value I also think you’ll enjoy it a lot more by wearing it (and be able to enjoy the sentimental side of it). I have found that when you buy a watch as a “filler” that you don’t love (unsure how you feel about the breitling) that it doesn’t really get worn and you won’t enjoy it as much.

Now if you are set on not wearing the Rolex, I’d start with asking what type of watch you want. Manual or automatic? Sport or dressy? Size of wrist? Functionality? What is the main purpose of it? I would personally go with someone a bit different than the Rolex to add some variety to my watch collection (maybe something dressier or with some interesting complication, a JLC or similar). But anyway, with more info I can be more helpful.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I work in downtown LA so don’t really want to risk getting robbed. Insurance won’t even cover me because I live in LA!

I’m looking for something sporty. Really not a big watch guy so not too picky. Like I said the only specification I really care about is the metal strap

A few things:

1) you can definitely find insurance that covers you in LA. I live in NYC and have a watch collection and I’m able to have all my watches insured at reasonable rates

2) more importantly, if you aren’t a watch person, don’t buy a $5k watch as a replacement for your Rolex. Either don’t wear a watch or get something affordable. If you don’t like watches you’ll probably have buyers remorse

3) related to the above, no one cares what watch you wear. So if you are just doing it to fit in, don’t do it.

Wear something that speaks to you and that you love seeing every day. I see more Apple Watches + Garmin/Suunto/Coros watches than traditional watches being worn among An->MD in LA banking, if I'm completely honest. Nobody will care about it more than you will, by a large margin.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Yeah the decision is clear. A Garmin fenix 7x Sapphire Solar.

Honestly, I’m addicted to the health and training data that Garmin watches provide. It’s really amazing. Worth it to wear all day.

Cartier Santos but the automatic one, reference number WSSA0029; has a great history, fair price, and a timeless design. Also the easy link system on the bracelet makes it nice if you ever want to switch between straps, bracelets, etc.
