What is up with Spread Collars?

It seems that almost every mainstream brand is selling mostly, if not only, spread collar dress shirts. I don't understand this modern day obsession with spread collars. Is it me or are they repulsive and make you look like some toddler with a wide neck? Not to mention the risk of the tie loop being revealed because of the unreasonably wide collar style. Conversely, the point-collar seems to be more of an aesthetic, classic, and respectable look.

Listening to this, you may think that I'm some old-school boomer who is stuck in the past and is failing to get accustomed to new trends. But in reality, I'm a 20-year old college kid, falling into probably the youngest demographic on WSO other than the HS try-hards.

In conclusion, should I just suck it up and get accustomed? Am I just clueless because there are still plenty of point-collar brands out there? If so, I would really appreciate it if you could please share the names of these hidden, "archaic" treasures. Thank you.

Shouldn't you be networking for a better job? Knew I should have posted this in a front-office forum...

Nobody wears ties anymore. Spread collar looks way better without a tie. Even with a tie, it looks more than fine. Nobody cares. The point collar looks bad with a jacket unless you have a tie on, which people usually don't. The spread collar tucks in nicely underneath the jacket collar and looks clean. You probably still wear wide peak lapels and oxford collars.

It's rare. I am by no means opposed to ties, and I tend to be a more traditional/conservative person, especially when it comes to fashion, but it's just not necessary anymore. It's not necessary, it's not required, and in a lot of instances, it's bordering on inappropriate. It's a dying accessory, unfortunately (because I do actually like ties and will happily wear one when the situation requires).

As one should be. I recently found myself in a church somewhere in South America and realized I was wearing only flip flops, short shorts and a shirt. Kinda awkward as the elderly couple next to me was wearing Sunday attire.

...and the Truth shall set you free

See, the thing is though the demise in culture is always incremental. Today you'll say that... what about 20-30 years down the line? Will you then say sweatpnats are acceptable? On the flipside 20 years ago would you have thought it to be acceptable to get rid of ties?

Point Collar - Shirt Collar Styles | Deo Veritas

I feel like something like this looks nice and professional, but then again in not in finance yet so idk

Agreed - don't think it's necessary for it to be as excessive as they were decades ago (e.g. Goodfellas picture above) but it should at least be like this picture. Anything more spread, and it would look terrible.

Can you post pics of what you mean? It sounds like you're talking about the severe cutaway collars, which I agree tend not to look good.

But a standard spread collar (this is the basic collar you'd find from the English shirtmakers if you go on the website of Harvie and Hudson, Hilditch and Key, etc.) looks fine and tends to look better than a more pointed collar if you're wearing a jacket and no tie.

You might want to check out Budd shirts. The classic Budd collar is sort of a cross between a spread and a point and it just works incredibly well whether you're wearing a tie or not. I think that Turnbull and Asser has a similar collar style: https://www.buddshirts.co.uk/blog/2016/11/collars/. The "washington collar" in that link is what I would call a standard point collar.

Really appreciate the response - one of the first that has actually been on topic lmao. As for pics, please see above. I agree that the Goodfellas style is perhaps too old-fashioned and definitely excessive. I like the one I posted (George Lazenby, James Bond) but think it may be a tad bit tall/long. The last image above is what I would consider to be the minimum threshold for a point collar - anything wider than that, and it becomes spread.

I think both the washington and budd collar look good. Any idea how I can filter for them in the sites you suggested or any other brands that carry them?

AFAIK Budd is the only company that makes the Budd collar.

It will probably be hard to find a classic American point or "Washington" style collar as the spread/semi-spread is much more popular now.

This is fine with khakis and a polo or linen shirt or something but seeing people wear suits / dress trousers with good shoes and no socks just reeks of trying way too hard.
