Can anyone suggest ways to properly back test portable alpha for a hedge fund strategy / create a model portfolio?

Title says it all. I’m trying to figure out the best way to create a hypothetical portable alpha portfolio where I combine my firms alpha component with beta exposure that is expressed through S&P500 swaps. Not sure best place to start. Thanks
