Consulting --> HF
Hi all,
Am pretty new here but am starting at McK soon and recently have been doing a lot of reading since I've graduated and have more time. I find HFs super interesting and wanted to know if it's possible to move from consulting to (ideally a L/S analyst position) at a HF? Any resources to learn more about what it's like to work in the space? Any skills I should learn?
Def doable for MMs like Citadel/Point72 etc.
Harder for activist funds. Would probs need to do MFPE first.
Curious as to why this is the case? I would imagine depending on the situation, there can be some significant improvement in performance by understanding where value is for certain assets, etc. While understanding modeling and valuation is certainly key, I would think that consultants could offer some value-add if an activist is pitching a spin-off, carve-out, etc.
Definitely the opposite
Single manager (including activist) funds have a lot of McKenzie/Bain people, never met one at an MM who came from consulting
Maverick hired quite a few McKinsey consultants back in my day, who generally performed really well. You have to be slightly more intentionally about your search, but it is very doable. (Happy to help when you get to that point, DM me on Twitter)
