Hedge Fund Middle Office
Hello Monkeys!
Currently I work for a large Canadian asset manager. My goal is to move to NYC and ultimately interested in fundraising and client relationship management roles in hedge funds.
What do you think about taking a middle office operations role at a NYC hedge fund as a stepping stone?
As well, what are the salary expectations for these roles in NYC?
All insights are welcome!
Spending time in the Big Apple of NYC is a great way to get a head start in your finance career. The job markets are contracting recently, but you should find a job eventually. Having a middle office can be a great way to pull others up the ladder while also having a strong position. Working in some of the most prestigious hedge funds, you can be making $175K no problem, and with bonuses you can get closer to $250K, just for entry level.
Thank you very much for your insight!
I have have a potential role in S&T from a large Canadian bank, but it would be in Toronto. From the two options which one would be best for someone who ultimately wants to be in NYC?
I disagree with the prior take. If your goal is to do HF fundraising/client relations, I'd find it a lot more relevant to get yourself into a sales or client-facing role *in any industry* than to go do trade reconciliation at a HF middle office. I find it extremely hard to pull off a transition from the latter.. just look up Linkedin and you'll get a sense of what the most frequent path is.
By the way, no one who has ever lived in NYC for a meaningful period of time would call it "the Big Apple of NYC". Avoid that advice.
