HF Analysts - How do you organize your email?
See title. Thinking I need a better way to filter through the 100s of emails that come through a day.
What's the best way to filter out spam / useless SS emails? Have thought of setting up an autoroll feature for emails that contain coverage tickers, but won't be 100% perfect. Worth it to filter spec sales notes vs analyst research? Any use in categorizing emails by ticker?
Have never had much of a process in place here, but can't imagine 10k unread emails is the most efficient way to consume info
~10yrs exp, have never filtered my e-mail take everything straight to the dome
yeah with this guy, have a folder of "to do later" but basically just read or delete everything every few hours
on lots of distros where something is useful once in a while but i dont always care
your brain adjusts
Same, except I’ll use the flag system to basically set things aside to either read later or remind myself to do later. But I usually don’t have more than 20 flagged items at a time, and I’ll clear them out (ie if it’s a timely piece that I flagged to read later, but I still haven’t after a week, I get rid of it)
but I never use rules, folders, etc. Outlook search is pretty decent now
I have rules that send emails from certain ppl to certain folders. I have a sales folder for all the annoying sales ppl, unimportant sellside research goes in another folder that I check every morning. It’s annoying but you basically just start copy ppls emails by segment (sales, sell side, spec sales), copy them and set rules, and filter out the unimportant ppl. I also have a folder by company where I file relevant stuff for each company. Makes it much easier when I want to look back at something.
Several YOE, I gave up early. Inbox is beyond saving. I have a rule to put firm emails into a folder. Otherwise just skim every few hrs and see if anything needs responding and dump stuff into ‘respond’ & ‘read later’ folder. It’s not a good approach, I miss stuff all the time. But if they really need me they’ll call or bbg me.
Best return on time for me was just learning outlook search filters
It'll depend a lot on whether you have bloomberg or not.
I advice you to only open your emails 2/3 times a day (if your boss is not using this as a way to communicate with you obviously)
Jim Valentine's book 'Best Practices for ER analysts' contains good, practical advice for this thing
can confirm, great book and saved me time on the inbox
