HF PMs - what makes a Buy side analyst successful?

This is a question mainly for Hedge Fund Portfolio Managers and buy side analysts -> I'm currently a sell side analyst and would probably transition to a L/S market neutral hedge fund in the near future. What are the key items you look for in a sector specialist analyst? How can the analyst be the most helpful to you? What are the pitfalls to avoid? What would make an analyst a superstar under your view?

Be hungry and dedicated when you first join. You should be doing everything you can to learn from your senior analyst/PM and make their lives easier. Be a (very) quick learner and take ownership of your coverage, make us listen to your ideas and don’t cower when they’re not playing out the way you expected.

There isn’t a checklist really, just be useful and make us money.
