I just want to move back to NYC

I just graduated from college and moved down South to take a job from a prestigious university. It is a very large endowment and I am on the public side, cover HF investments.

Also bought a new car, passed my CFA first level, things were looking good.
However I miss NYC so much and I am not happy at all here. Oh man, it is just DIFFICULT. I like my team, but I miss my friends in NYC everyday. ;(

I'd rather take an average pay job, move back to my small apartment in west village, and take subway to work. I must sound like a sensitive fag right now. But I really hope to get some advices from you guys. Thanks so much.

So basically you can't handle being away from your friends and you are willing to basically fuck yourself to be around them.

Take a long weekend, fly up and see them and don't quit this job. NYC will always be there, your reputation will not.

Suck it up.

This is a pretty common feeling for most college grads. Speaking broadly, you aren't necessarily going to be able to recapture what you had in school. Your friends are going to move on too. It would be a shame to throw a good thing away to move back to NYC only to have them drift apart again.

It sounds like you are just lonely. Make new friends. Get some hobbies. etc.

^ Perhaps you should. One of them is a top target that consistently places numerous students at quite a lot of prestigious NYC firms. The other is barely a semi-target.

Its hard to make friends in a small town after you get used to NYC. Social life is very difficult. But you are right, I am lonely here.

Consider it this way, if you'd gone in to I banking, you would never have time to see your friends anyways, and this way you make more money and get to sleep more than 5 hours a night.

“...all truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” - Schopenhauer

Bro, you need to take a night time class at a local college. I feel yah dude, my whole crew is back home also, but eventually you will make a couple friends.

If you happen to be at Duke, PM me and I can put you in contact with my friend who is down there. Awesome dude and solid wing if you need it lol.

From your post it's clear what makes you happy. Find a way to move back to NYC bro.

Look, at the end of the day you decide what's important in your life. I personally find it sad how low of a priority family, friends, and a sense of community is in this country (it was not always like this). There is no shame in admitting that you miss NYC and if you need to go back then please do it.

Here's what I'd do if I were in your shoes: I'd suck it up for just one year to get some solid experience. Then start planning my transition back to NYC.

Lord knows that there are plently of opportunties in NYC for someone like you. Best of luck.

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Whoa, family and friends are important, but if you never give yourself time to meet new people you will seriously screw yourself.

Sometimes leaving friends for something new is the best thing you can do.

Take any class and start rolling out to college bars dude. Never too old to creep.

I am sure there are some dudes on this site in your geographic area. I would create another screen name, post a meet up and Bam, networking and new friends.

Ok, go get older guys.

Your love life is besides the point. Join a gym, sign up for yoga, get on match.com. All this will help you meet people and make friends .

Let me echo the please don't be a hipster sentiment. And find a group of people who do things you like.

advices becoming to get amusing. lol. great.

I was in your position and moved to NYC. Best decision of my life. There's plenty of opportunity here -- you just need to find it.

Really? Did you move back immediately or waited a couple years?

You're a girl and can't make friends.. are you socially challenged?

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

If you are, blackfinancier can help you out. Remember, once you go black, you don't go back...

LOL.

Remember that chick who argued with you endlessly black? She disappeared just as quick as she came onto the site.

I recommend some fake tan and maybe a tattoo. That always helps in making friends.

Basically JWOW

Bottom line: moving back to NYC without ~1 year of experience is going to end up with you broke and homeless. Suck it up, wait 10 months and start applying for jobs.

^ I agree with the above. With just a year of exp, it'll be hard to find something. Start looking and reaching out to recruiters at the 1.5 year mark.

For now... I guess you just need to suck it up. Try looking out for events to go to... could be drop-in sports, taking classes (yoga, cooking, whatever), volunteering (in case you plan to do B-school - could be a way to get to know similar aged/similar industry people while checking the extracurrics box), something nature-y, and so on...

Definitely understand where you're coming from - you need an outlet - usually in the form of friends/family - besides work. But it could be worse... I'm assuming your hours aren't too bad?

hours arent bad at all. But thats almost makes life more difficult. I told my colleagues at work that I wanted to take a cooking class, they were kinda cracked up.
