Jumping from PERE to HF. Advice?

Hi all,

I work as an investment analyst (entry role) in real estate private equity in Europe. The firm has some name to it, being in the top 10 of the PERE list consistently and having multiple asset classes (PE, RE, Infra, Debt, etc.) The work I do ranges from buying single assets like an office, buying a reit, buying a large portfolio or private real estate company, working with management of our portfolio real estate companies (although not much, this is more the asset management side), and more. My background also includes honors at a semi-target in North America and buy side internships in global real estate firms (SWF/ Insurance/ Pension/ family office/ etc. types)

I have an interest in public equities as well though and am considering making an effort to jump into the HF space. I read investment books in undergrad, investment letters, and continue to read the news everyday. I have an investment account with a few holdings as well. So I know I have a true interest in the public markets and real estate private equity as well. I'd rather not be a REIT analyst all the time though, as I like looking at consumer businesses too.

However I never did any stock pitch competitions and struggle with crafting an investment pitch in stocks. So a few questions come to mind:

• How would you go about learning to pitch an investment? Are there any books to read on this, or resources to learn from? Would you make your pitch in a word doc or powerpoint? What is used in a SM shop? Some Sohn conference presentations are just trash from the "best" investors so I'm a little confused.

• What recommendations would you have if you were in my shoes making the jump from PERE to HF? PERE is a bit more niche than the typical corporate buyout PE exits to HF so any advice would be great.

• What materials would you recommend me to look into?

• What are some of the best ways to get looked at by a PM or a hiring manager in a SM or MM?

• How important is being in the right geography when recruiting? Currently in Europe thinking of moving back to North America.

• As I mentioned, I am interested in public equities. But I'm also curious on how much the real estate groups of top hedge funds pay as well as their individual investment strategies if known. Think Davidson Kempner, King Street, Sculptor, SVPGlobal, Farallon Capital, Long Pond Capital, etc.

• Anything else you'd advise!
