Best Careers in Finance

Hey everyone!

I'll jump right into it, I'm currently entering my final year of high-school and have always known I want to work in Finance. I'm based in Canada so depending on the specific program I pursue (assuming it's a competitive target) will determine the kind of Finance I work in. For example a school like Waterloo with its double degree programs I've heard can lead to quant positions and overall technical positions, ones on the buy side specifically at hedge funds whereas a school like Ivey leads to a more traditional route with good placements into IB and consulting.

I can also code in multiple languages (am alright) and have some good technical skills but am not a math genius who can do what quants do nor do I see myself pursuing a career like swe. Then there's also AI and technologies overall increasing capabilities which may lead to automation and replacements in specific careers.

So pretty much my question is, for a young ambitious student who wants to work in Finance, doesn't know exactly what career, is aiming for a career with high comp and doesn't mind long hours, and considering the future of this industry what are the best professions to pursue? Still the same ol IB --> buy side PE or HF?

Thanks in Advance!

Forgot to mention, right now I'm leaning towards IB but wanted to get a better understanding of other careers out there in this industry while also getting clarification about any implications AI may cause for IB jobs (and other highly sought out finance careers) because even though it's a relationship based business the stuff juniors do seems like it can be possibly automated.

I am not the expert to talk about industries and schools but I would like to tell you two things. First, it's okay that you do not know what career you want to follow, being here means you are probably on the right track. Second, sooner or later you will realise what the actual "long hours" feel like and only then you will understand if you can handle it or not. For the moment, my advice is to do your best grade-wise and be ready for the application period. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.
