HR call with Head of Lateral Recruiting EB - what to expect

Hi everyone,

I had a call with the President of an EB (Evercore, Lazard, Moelis) a few months ago. Got an email this week from HR saying he passed on my resume. And they scheduled a call with the Head of Lateral Recruiting next week.

I wanted some advice on what to expect / potential questions besides the standard "why investment banking?".

My background:

  • current master of finance student from a Canadian target (graduating in a few weeks)

  • prior BS in aerospace engineering from a US non-target. Experience post-uni: one year each of research and enterpreneurship (class of 2020, international student, didn't have much choice)

  • Do not have prior banking experience

  • However, I have good modelling experience: 10-month internship in investment management, leadership role at the student-run fund of my university, and IB/ER case comps.

I do not know the group or exact role. And since I'm not an MBA (so not associate) and the call is with the head of lateral recruiting, I do not know exactly what to expect.

Thank you in advance for any advice or input!

Respectfully, how did you swing a call with the president of EB while not knowing what to expect during a call with an HR rep?

Charm and sincerity.
I do not know what to expect specific to "lateral recruiting" not HR in general. Besides, you can never learn enough.

In my mind (could be 100% wrong), they probably have a spot open now or can anticipate one being open in the near future, and since you’re graduating relatively soon they’re reaching out. Would imagine the person will describe the role and ask you about your background so if I were you I’d prep your story as to why you actually are interested in IB, how you are prepared for the role and are qualified etc. maybe the person will walk you through what the interview process looks like. Just prepare for it as if it were an interview since you can never go wrong over preparing.

Thank you. That is a great insight.
And yes, I always treat any calls like an interview.

I was particularly curious how questioning related to lateral recruiting works if people had done that before. I am a lot more comfortable with bankers than HR because HR generally has boxes to check and there is less open-mindedness in what they look for.
