Incoming student at Seneca College. Need some guidance
Hi Guys, I am new to the Forum, so apologies. I am a CFA Level 3 candidate with 2 years of experience in Investor Relations. I come from a non Target school from India, and have applied for Financial Planning to Seneca College for Jan 2022. I am well equipped with Data Analytics with Excel, FM.
What can I do to break into the Investment Banking Internships in Canada? And finally getting through with a job?
Any guidance would really help?

Can you guys suggest what more can I do?

I want to pursue a MBA after some years of experience. The work I did was very close to Corporate Advisory. I really thought if I could learn the tools, like FM etc I could really try getting one of the Banks for IB Internships.
Other than changing the program, What can I do now?
Banks are unlikely to look at your resume because your not at a targeted university and your also not at a university. There is honestly little to no chance for you if you stay at Seneca College.
You need to transfer to a target graduate program in Canada as your experienced although maybe it could work for you as well if you can get into a targeted commerce undergrad program. But do you really want to spend another 4 years in school? Alternatively, finish up your CFA and see if you can find something else that matches your interests in finance. Lots of info on this site. Read up, your question shows your lack of self-research.
Thanks you for giving this clarity. I actually wanted to a pursue a MBA, however, thought it is too early and that is decided to pursue it after some years of experience. Btw, Various banks have these Co op programs such as right now which is on is the Winter and Summer analyst progam for IB, Wealth Management etc. How and What can I do to get selected in such programs? And, I am well equipped with some tools like Financial Modelling, Data Analytics through Excel. Will there be no chance for me such internship programs too?
Other than changing my program right now, What more can I do to reach there? Any thoughts?
I'm sorry but from Seneca College you are wasting your time for IB. Full stop. Summer recruiting is over and winter recruiting for co-op programs is open but it's usually just a couple of people and they are in university programs. I don't know much about wealth management but that may be a better fit as your program is focused on financial planning.
Breaking into IB in Canada is incredibly tough from a post-MBA associate standpoint even if you go to Ivey / Rotman. I see more often that people get into some corp finance related position at the banks and then network and lateral their way into IB.
Honestly, that is still understandable. For the moment I am demotivated, trying to work hard for a Fall 2022 IB Internship is also tough, even though you have some FM skills. Ill still try hard and not loose hope.
No offence, but if you think you'll get into investment banking from Seneca College, you've done literally zero research. You need to go to a top university to have even a small chance.
You are right. I wanted to pursue a MBA but that was post some experience. If I had a bachelor's from a Non Target Canadian Uni or a US Uni that would have just set some things better atleast. I just happen to finish my BBA from a non Target University India. My intention for the moment is to try get Internships. I have worked on some skills like Financial Modelling, Power BI. I'll still try seeing things from a broader scope and thank you so much for the thought. It's totally right, things are way too difficult. Anyway, Thank you so much
I know MBAs are almost a prerequisite for top finance jobs in India, but here in Canada they don't mean jack shit unless you got them from a top US school like Harvard or Wharton.
Would suggest going to a different school. Consider doing an Mfin and then working at one of the smaller boutiques (think Firepower or 8Capital). Firepower cares less about their applicants and does some interesting work. You can lateral to bigger shops too.
8 capital >>> Firepower which is basically a boiler room but you'll still get to say 'IB' in your name which gives you a shot at lateralling somewhere else.
