I have a friend who is going to be a sophmore at Wharton next year. He's looking to get ahead of the curve and get an internship in the city for his summer between sophmore and junior year. I'm currently between my sophmore and junior year and was able to get a good internship due to family connections but I don't know if he could swing that. Anyone know anything better for him than "have your dad make some calls"?

Get a part time job in private equity, banking, anything. Then be aggressive in interviews, write lots of emails, work connections, thank you notes, get a great GPA, read the journal, and present yourself well. if you don't have connections, you have to do it on your own, but it's a lot more impressive when people find out it was you who got yourself there, not daddy. at least that was my experience.
As a Wharton rising junior with no family connections and an IB job at a BB bank, I would suggest that the student take classes over the summer, like those that would allow him/her to take the upper level finance classes that go hand and hand with the internship roles: FNCE 203, 207 ...
interesting. never thought of that route... am a Wharton rising senior at a BB bank and did the typical Priv Wealth Mgmt internship at a BB brokerage. don't think that sets you apart for soph internship, but that is reasonable as a frosh internship. i got lucky enough to do a consulting internship during the school year, so that probably distinguished me.
as far as GPA goes... the sweet spot is 3.7-3.8. if you can manage lots of E/C's and a 3.9, more power to you. make sure your buddy networks and attends all the banking presentations and finds out the deadlines for those internships. i know Lehman took a few sophomores this year. BlackRock isn't banking but they also took a soph. GS also took lots of sophomores, but none for banking. even if it's not banking, you can readily network it into a banking offer for the next summer.

I don't think you need daddy to set you up with an internship. If your GPA is good, E/Cs are good and you are aware of what happens in a real bank (not something you saw in the movie Wall Street); then you will be well off. Also, networking and ensuring you have people who back you will help. Recommend a publication called The Dealbook (from NY Times) - will keep you up to date on all the deals - and you can talk to people about these deals as well.
