So im interviewing with this firm that has an undergraduate program where you do rotations til you find a team (teams are like 5-8 people)

They call me and tell me they like me so much they think I should skip the program and go straight to a team and they want me to interview for this team.

I do that, it went really well. I had been told I was the only one competing for it. Now 2 days later they call me and tell me they havent gotten a chance to confer about that team, but they also want me to interview with another team.

They have said again and again how they really like me, saying that my situation I am a "victim of my skill and knowledge".

Anyone have thoughts about this situation. It looks like they are going to make me an offer, but I feel like Im being strung along. Most people had 6 interviews , im going on 13.

Your saga reminds of an experience I had in B-School...

An acquaintance is the President of a search firm and is good friends with the CEO of a financial services firm in Chicago.

When I was in B-School these two gentlemen concocted an idea of gathering experienced professionals from around the country to an elite recruiting day at the company. 11 candidates were invited (I was one of them) and we were invited to a full day courtship at the firm. We had breakfast, heard presentations from the executive leadership team about their respective operating areas e.g. Structured Finance, Sales & Marketing, Fixed Income, Wholesale etc. We had lunch with the CEO and the executive team, had the chance to ask questions and mingle etc. Then the executive management team apparently got together in a huddle and discussed the candidates they met and selected the folks they'd like to have conversations with.

Out of the 11 candidates, I was one of only 4 selected to interview at the company. Then, as one of the 4, I was the only one who interviewed across multiple operating areas.

Anyways, I had a total of 11 interviews over the course of six weeks and no job offer. At 13 interviews, you definitely beat me!! Ja ja ja

That was the oddest, most surreal, strangest, ridiculous, exhaustive recruting process I've ever experienced. Not likely to be repeated, thank god!

About the only caveat to that whole day and subsequent fiasco is that I befriended a fellow candidate who has actually become one of my closest friends and her husband is the head of human resources at JP Morgan, Retail Financial Services North America :-)

Unfortunately, he doesn't touch IB :-(

well, what other options do you have? other offers?

If you have nothing else to go on, I would suck it up and just keep interviewing with them until you get the offer.

You don't want to piss off HR by sounding irritated...I am sure you will get an offer if they said again and again how much they like you.

probably some inter-office issues with teams trying to snag the best talent (like a preemptive bid) before you go out onto the "market" so to speak.

...just make sure you like the team you're going to work for...if you're unsure, you might hint that interviewing with some other groups would interest you.

hope that helps...

I dont have other options because I've focused my search (and I stopped pursuing other things last week when I thought it was clear I was about to get an offer). The thing is, that doesnt matter, this is in my opinion the best in its segment of the finance industry. I wouldnt want to go anywhere else and I have a lot of contacts now at the company (the ceo is an alum actually). Id wait a month for this, it just sucks to be dragged out when I want it so bad.

And by 13 interviews, I mean 13 people for 30 minutes. 4 rounds so far...

The most ironic thing is, if I was less qualified they would have just made me an offer (albeit this way I come in in better stature).

Now that you've spoken to at least two teams, are you strongly inclined more so about one?

If so, perhaps you could use that to nudge HR.

Just a thought...

I've spoken to one, I'm speaking to the other next week. The first one hasn't "discussed what they think" yet.

The wierdest part is NO ONE is competing with me for these positions right now. They weren't planning on filling them until the summer anyway (when I would start). They just want me to join a team now so things i can focus on it.

And both are really awesome. I don't really care, I just want the job in my hands........
