Networking for a return offer

incoming IB SA here. Basically all networking I've done has been virtual, so I'm not too familiar with in-person networking lol. To get a return offer, I know it's really important to get to know those on your team, so I was wondering what tips/best practices I should follow this summer when it comes to networking. Will intern sponsors typically organize networking opportunities for SAs and FTers? Will FT people typically reach out to the interns or will interns be expected to reach out and coordinate instead?

Will this typically be in the form of lunches, coffees, and is it better to ask in person rather than via email? Is it weird if I randomly approach people, or is it better to first reach out to those we work with and ask for referrals from there?

Interested in hearing this as well as 2022 SA will be my first banking internship

Hi! I was an IB intern at a BB firm in NYC last summer and will be returning full-time this year. I spoke to the FT in my group about this and was under the impression that unlike internship recruiting, in-person networking on the job is not required but it definitely helps. While it was a fully virtual internship for me, I decided to live in NYC throughout the duration of my internship anyway. I had 1 group event and 2 IB wide events that happened over the summer, but I wouldn't count on just those events as a way to expand your network. I went out for coffee with about 5-7 bankers, it wasn't necessarily a way to "get a return offer" though it certainly helped, but it was a great way for me to build meaningful relationships with people who I was working with over the summer and when I return. I reached out to the full timers personally (through email/text/after a meeting) to schedule 20 minutes and asked to meet at their most convenient location, which could be in the office or at a Starbucks close to where they are living so that it saves them some commute time. Sorry for my imperfect English, I'm an international. I hope this helps and good luck!

not the op, thanks for the advice! english is great by the way. rock on man!
