It is a perfectly fine question to ask. His GPA is a 3.79, not a 3.8. He is worried about putting an inaccurate number on his resume. While I think rounding to 3.8 is fine, I don't think the question warrants such responses.

Personally, I'd round to the nearest 10th.

So your GPA is a 0, sorry. Look at the plus side, if you can get your GPA up about 5.0, you can call that a 10. Now go gettem'!

I asked the question because I saw some of my friends get burned when they rounded up. It wasn't as insignificant as a .01 but they rounded a 3.66 to a 3.7 and it got flagged by HR. I just don't want the same thing happening to me.

What do you mean by "burned?"

what do you mean burned? on, for example, UBS's site when you input your GPA your only options are 3.6 or 3.7 in that case.

i can imagine a scenario where an interviewer is peeved that your resume doesn't match your transcript, but who's going to ding you for having a 3.79? why take risk when you don't have to at all. Don't be insecure; you have a strong GPA.

I think the question is legit. Our career advisors tell us to round to the nearest tenth. But I don't think a 3.95 should be rounded to a 4.0. A 4.0 makes a strong statement that your transcript is perfect. Just my opinion.

There is so much shit going around about gpas. Who knows what to believe? You've got kids commenting on the poll that you should do whatever to your gpa you need to do to get in. Now we have kids saying be careful going from 3.79 to 3.8. Why can't we all just say that nobody knows shit about shit and advise people to use discretion.

You're a fucking idiot. Nobody said "be careful about going from a 3.79 to 3.8." If you have a keen eye, it's easy to tell which posters are idiot college students and which are actually on wall st.

J, I know people that have increased a 3.5 to 3.7 and didn't get caught. They took a risk, it worked for them and they are working.

I didn't put down that I had a 3.5 last year and nobody knows that I even attended any other school. The only thing employers see is my near 3.9 (3.88 to be precise) gpa from this year

Even if HR was to bring it up, our career center says that you should only list your gpa from current institutions attended and on your transcript it says only your current university gpa is regarded as your official gpa. Your combined gpa is provided for informational purposes only and is not your current official gpa.

3.80 is the same damn thing as a 3.8 downlow.

Wow, it's called significant figures. This is an impressively dumb comment.

Zala you must understand though that people lie about their gpas all the time. Some who get lucky and don't get caught might never have to provide proof of their gpas again (except for maybe MBA programs.

The bottom line is due to knowing how competitive getting an ibanking job can be, people will lie about their gpas. It happens all the time.
