Sophomore Summer Internships

I am a current freshman trying to figure out what to do for next summer in terms of internships. My current plan is to apply to anything and everything that I can in Boston, Chicago, and New York (I only plan on applying to the BB internships in NY because I can live in Boston and Chicago without rent). The biggest issue that I have run into is that I have been having a hard time finding a lot of shops that offer sophomore summer internships. If anyone knows shops in either Chicago or Boston that offer them it would be greatly appreciated. I've already started looking into the BB internships I am just unsure if there are any mm shops or boutiques that have them.

In my experience, sophomore internships were quite difficult to get because it is difficult for firms to spend all this money on a college kid who has a lower chance of staying with the shop.  I would recommend networking with you father, or family to leverage your connections in the industry and get them to do you a favor (who know maybe you could help their kid with a favor someday too).  Good luck and keep searching

There are some issues here:

  1. If you are not a diversity candidate most BB, EB or top MM banks won’t even consider you as they are looking to fill their junior year SA class who can convert into full time

  2. May I ask why you only want to apply to BBs? Even as you go into junior year recruitment you should cast as wide of a net as possible unless you your resume is insanely cracked and you know you resume won’t be passed on. Additionally, some EBs may be a much better culture fit and do much more interesting deals that you may enjoy. My advice is to cast a really wide net when you start networking and narrow it down after that. You will also realise which firms you have a better shot at as firms recruit based on fit much more than you expect.

You say you are a freshman so your priority now should really just be to find any IB or PE internship (most likely a regional boutique) that will show recruiters you understand what IB is, have basic experience in it and are interested in the industry. To do this search up regional boutiques in your area and network with them. A lot are pretty open to taking freshman/sophomore on if you show you are capable and eager to learn as they have no fixed recruiting structure.

You should also get into business orgs at your school and get into leadership positions. Your experiences and the stories you can tell about them is what will get you the best offer for junior year.
