"Why this role?"

Hi everyone,

If you get asked "why this role?" in an interview - does it mean why do you wanna work in M&A in general or why do you want to work in M&A at that particular bank? (so combining why the firm and why the role into one?)

Thanks!

Everyone already knows you want the money, so they're asking you why you want to work there besides making a lot of money. Money isn't the ultimate motivator when you've been on the job for multiple years being in the office from 8 am to midnight or later every day, 6 days a week, and the days you take off you still work. They want to know you know what you're getting yourself into and won't quit on them after a couple months should you not like the hours. If you find the work interesting and enjoy the underlying business model, you'd power through.

Did you read my response? It’s about the job function and not the bank. There’s no difference between JPM and GS. These people see through the crap of “oh wow mister your bank is so cool I want to work for you!”. They just want to know that you have a reason to put up with the terrible hours and endless requests and not quit in the first month. I’ve had enough kids try that “your company does very important deals and interesting work that would challenge me” that is obviously BS because they just want to get paid well and are funneled into finance. Just answer about why you want work in transactional finance and if you don’t have a good reason besides “I like money” then you’ll need to reevaluate getting into it or you’ll burn out fast.
