Amount of interviews

So here's an interesting question for everyone.
I would like to break this down into 2 groups of different people: 1) Undergrads, 2) BB Analysts looking at exit-ops
How many different firms do you guys find yourselves interviewing with?  Do you ever find yourself interviewing with firms that you are not particularly interested in, as a backup?  If so, how do you treat these interviews and how do you feign your interest?  Is it better to have a focused interview process where you only interview with firms you are truly interested in, or to play the numbers game, just in case?

As an undergraduate I believe it's truly a numbers game (UCLA). Only VERY select people have the luxury of choosing which bank they want to work out. Every year during SA recruiting there's generally about 1-2 superstars at our school that snag up a sickening amount of offers. The rest end up going with where they happen to get accepted. Unfortunately, many are left out in the rain.

I'm sure it's a different story for working analysts.

I am an undergrad at a target and sent out as many resumes/cover letters as possible.  For FT recruiting I dropped my resume for over 50 positions.  Some I really wanted and others were backups.  Of those 50 I got 2 FT offers. I went on many first rounds where I feigned interest.  I did my homework for every single company and was always able to answer the question "Why our firm?" and at least seemed interested in their company. For the firms I was truly interested in I did more research and always tried to attend the info sessions and do the networking thing. In this market play the numbers game especially at the undergraduate level.
