Australia related - From Law to Finance

Hi guys,

I have a somewhat peculiar background. I will try to give an accurate depiction of where I am at.

I am an Australian with a US passport. I completed my undergrad in finance and did quite well, and then went straight into postgraduate law, in which I have also performed quite well academically. The law school ranks in the top 15 in the world.

I have just returned from interning with an extremely prestigious international law firm in one of their foreign offices over the summer as an intern in their mergers & acquisitions team. If I were to accept an offer there and move, you would not actually begin your career until 2021. They recruit years in advance. I'm currently working in corp fin m&a back in Australia. We do small cap IPOs, M&A and capital raisings. I am currently chewing through WSP as fast as possible to get my modelling abilities up to date. The last thing I will mention is that I speak fluent Chinese.

Questions
- If I were to go into IB, should I still pursue law for at least a couple of years in Australia? Or should I continue with my current role after I graduate and perhaps pursue a part-time masters at a respectable uni? Which of these avenues would possibly allow me to begin as an associate?

  • Should I complete this year of law, then head off to America with one year of corp fin under my belt? Perhaps pursue an MBA over there? What are my chances of getting into a respectable MBA having given a rough idea of my pedigree.

Thanks for reading guys. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
