Background Check and canceled Internship
I am in a somewhat unique situation and was wondering how to handle it.
I got an offer for an off-cycle internship at an EB. When I applied, I listed "incoming working student" on my CV. However, the the small firm where I would be a working student (before my internship at the EB starts) told me that they mismanaged and actually don't need me anymore.
Will this be a reason for the EB to rescind my offer? In fact, do background checks "incoming positions on my CV"?
Edit: I contacted HR, they told me it's not an idsue
why was it on your resume if you didnt have any work experience there at the moment of applying to the EB. Yes this will look bad. Unless you put "expected" or something of the like they might think you're lying. You can always try reaching out to the recruiter and letting them know what happened. Good luck man
It is pretty common to put your incoming summer on your CV if you are recruiting for the following summer; it is a signal banks look for and increases your attractiveness as a candidate. No bullet points obviously, as that is lying (you don't know what you'll be doing).
I know it's common I've done it before- I've also been reamed out by directors at BB for not putting "Expected" on it, which they thought of as necessary. Anyway, honestly the OP will be fine.
If they don't need you anymore, what more is there to say?
As long as you had an offer letter/written evidence from the firm you’ll be fine, maybe reach out HR explaining your situation.
Not your fault if you have any proof you were going to work there (offer letter, emails). I would email your HR contact but this isn't something they would rescind for
Email feels a bit weird.
Hey Adam, do you still require me to do work at this other firm, before I start my offcycle at EB?
EDIT: Just emailed my HR contact. Lets see what his response is.
Obviously I'm just an intern, but I feel like an email that says your services aren't needed anymore would be sufficient in defending yourself from any HR questions. If you don't have one now, and they just told you over the phone, then I'd reach out to some contacts at the place you were supposed to work and ask for something in writing.
Hey man - I know this is somewhat of a dated thread but I'm currently in the same situation. I had an incoming 'internship' on my resume and luckily landed an offer for an SA 2021 role at a bank. The 'incoming internship' ended up getting cancelled so any advice on how to approach this with HR. Obviously, I was thinking of giving them an update with a newer version of my resume but any idea if they would conduct a verification check for my cancelled internship too i.e. ask for references or for offer letter/proof of employment documentation etc.? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
bump on this, in a very similar situation right now. will background checks confirm incoming internships? i currently have an incoming internship at a small PE firm listed on my resume, but i am planning on reneging on the offer because they are only paying me $20/hr and i was able to recently re-recruit and find a better role that is paying me a lot more for this summer.
Wanted to revive this thread as I am in the same situation. Any answers?
